Comparisons come and go when you are growing up. Sometimes you compare yourself to others, and sometimes others compare you to others. These comparisons can become very hurtful because they might make you feel inferior. I remember that in middle school one teacher of mine constantly repeated a quote over and over. At the time it just seemed like a nice quote. The quote she repeated was reportedly by Eleanor Roosevelt and it stated that “No one could make you feel inferior without your consent.” You and I are completely different, that’s a fact. God has created each and every one of us in a very special way. “There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but they are all from the same Spirit. There are different ways to serve, but we serve the same Lord. And there are different ways that God works in people, but it is the same God who works in all of us to do everything” (1 Corinthians 12:4-7). You and I have different abilities. You can see these in school or at church, at home or anywhere else. At church you can see that God has given different people different gifts, some brothers or sisters serve God by praising his name with an amazing voice He has given them, others go out and preach on the streets hoping to present our Lord to those who don’t know Him yet. All of these things are special but they are not ours, these things have been gifted to us by our Lord, His “Spirit decides what to give each one” (1 Corinthians 12:11). We have to always remember this because once we forget that God has gifted us these wonderful things, we can fall into the mistake of boasting them as if they were ours and trying to make others feel inferior, which is exactly what we are trying to avoid. It’s also important to remember that God is not like us, he does not judge us by comparing us to others, and to Him it does not matter “if you are a Jew or a Greek, a slave or free, male or female. You are all the same in Christ Jesus” (Galatians 3:28). What he wants from each and every one of us is to come into His presence and feel the love He has for us. God “does not consider some people to be better than others” (Acts 10:34). He loves us all the same, and He showed us this by dying for all of our sins. He didn’t say," I will die for you but not for your brother or sister". Comparisons are not helpful to us because one of us is going to get hurt. If you believe you are better than another, you hurt the other, and if you think you are not as good as the other, then you hurt yourself “so we should stop judging each other. Let’s decide not to do anything that will cause a problem for a brother or sister or hurt their faith” (Romans 14:13). |
