A man from Norfolk, VA called a local radio station to share this on Sept 11th, 2003. His name was Robert Matthews. These are his words:
"A few weeks before Sept 11th 2001, my wife and I found out we were going to have our first child. She planned a trip out to California to visit her sister. On our way to the airport, we prayed that God would grant my wife a safe trip and be with her. Shortly after I said 'amen' we both heard a loud pop and the car shook violently. We had blown out a tire. I replaced the tire as quickly as I could, but we still missed her flight. Both very upset, we drove home.
Molestos, regresamos a casa.
I recieved a call from my father who was retired FDNY. He asked what my wife's flight number was, but I explained that we missed the flight. My father informed me that her flight was the one that crashed into the southern tower. I was too shocked to speak. My father also had more news for me; he was going to help. 'This is not something I can just sit by for, I have to do something.' I was concerned for his safety, of course, but more because he had never given his life to Christ. After a brief debate, I knew his mind was made up. Before he got off of the phone, he said, 'take good care of my grandchild.' Those were the last words I ever heard my father say; he died while helping in the rescue effort.
My joy that my prayer of safety for my wife had been answered quickly became anger. Anger at God, at my father, and at myself. I had gone for nearly 2 years blaming God for taking my father away. My son would never know his grandfather, my father had never accepted Christ, and I never got to say goodbye.

Then something happened. About 2 months ago, I was sitting at home with my wife and my son, when there was a knock on the door. I looked at my wife, but I could tell she wasn't expecting anyone. I opened the door to a couple with a small child. The man looked at me and asked if my father's name was Jake Matthews. I told him it was. He quickly grabbed my hand and said, 'I never got the chance to meet your father, but it is an honor to meet his son.' He explained to me that his wife had worked in the World Trade Center and had been caught inside after the attack. She was pregnant and had been caught under debris. He then explained that my father had been the one to find his wife and free her. My eyes welled up with tears as I thought of my father giving his life for people like this. He then said, 'there is something else you need to know.' his wife then told me that as my father worked to free her, she talked to him and lead him to Christ. I began sobbing at the news. Now I know that when I get to heaven, my father will be standing to welcome me and that this family would be able to thank him themselves."
Luego algo paso.
When their baby boy was born, they named him Jacob Matthew in honor of the man who gave his life so mother and baby could live.
This story should help us to realize two things: First, that though it has been two years since the attacks, we should never let it become a mere tragic memory. And second, but most important, God is always in control.

This story might not be true. There are many parts of this story that make many say that this is just a story that someone came up with. In fact, if you google the name of the man in the story, you get directed to links that say this story is most likely not true. But, in my opinion, it doesn’t matter. It doesn’t matter because this story made me think about what I have. Just like the father in this story, there are many people who still need to hear about God’s love and salvation, about the sacrifice our Lord Jesus Christ did for us; People that we meet in school, at work, or even members of our own family. These people need something that we have, lets share the gift that has been giving to us.
This is a story that makes you think. We as believers have been gifted something that is incredibly amazing. We have been giving the gift of salvation. At first I thought about how happy I was that I had received this amazing gift. But then as I started to see just how beautiful the gift we have received was, I started to feel upset because I knew that not everybody had already received this gift. I guess what I’m trying to say is that something as beautiful and special like the gift of salvation our Lord has gifted us SHOULD be shared. I’ve learned to look at the gift of salvation or even God’s grace as a whole, as a glass of cool water with tons of ice on a hot summer day (like the ones we have been experiencing here in L.A). Why? Because it’s something everybody needs but not everybody has. If someone on a hot day looks thirsty, or in need of water, and we have this deliciously refreshing glass of water, its only right for us to share this glass of water. God’s word, grace, and His gift of salvation must be shared.
I keep saying that our salvation is a gift, and it is. God’s word says “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith--and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God-- not by works, so that no one can boast” (Eph. 2:8-9). If you think about it, we did absolutely nothing to deserve salvation. Many of us turned our backs to God; we never tried to reach out to Him. Christ did all of the heavy lifting, all we did was confess Him as our savior in a prayer. His word says, “He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand” (Psa. 40:2). This verse doesn’t say “we” did this or “we” did that, it says “He”. Our salvation is a gift.
In the story the man is worried about his father. He knows that his father hadn’t received Christ in his heart. This is a very worrying thought, because the man in the story already knew just how precious God’s grace and salvation was and he knew that his father hadn’t accepted the gift yet. Sometimes it’s hard to receive a gift. I was once told this analogy, in order to receive a new gift you must extend your arms out and put down anything you have in your hands in order to be able to hold the new gift. This is very powerful because it’s true. People are carrying many things on their hands; things like addiction, selfishness, lies, etc., and it’s hard to put those things down in order to accept the gift Christ has prepared for us. One thing we can do to make it easier to put those things down is speak to each other about God’s salvation, grace, and love. “Declare His glory among the nations, His wonders among all peoples” (Psa. 96:3). Share the gift you have.
